- Description:
- In this series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips from Atlanta, Georgia on February 6, 1968, Governor Lester Maddox reads a resignation letter from his State Board of Pardons and Paroles appointee Dr. William R. Dyer and takes questions from the press.
The clips open with people heading into the Governor's office. The next clip shows members of the Senate standing around. Maddox is seated at his desk. During the course of reading the resignation letter, the camera pans over to show Dr. William R. Dyer standing nearby.
Maddox: "I'm going to read a message to the Governor of Georgia from Dr. Dyer: Dear Governor, due to the friendship and esteem which I hold for you, I fully realize that not only is the present situation of my appointment as a member of the Board of Pardons and Paroles an embarrassment to me, but is an embarrassment to you personally and to your administration. I do not desire for this cloud to hang over my name or your administration, and I feel in the best interests of all concerned, I should resign as a member of the State Board of Pardons and Paroles and ask you to cause an investigation to be made concerning my business transactions with the state."
Here the clip cuts away and shows the press seated in the office.
Unidentified off-screen reporter: "Will his post on the Board be vacant until this investigation is completed?"
Maddox: "No, sir. In areas where it requires a membership of three people to be present, the Governor will have to serve until such time that an appointment is made."
Jim Whipkey: "Governor, are you saying then you're going to leave the position open until the investigation is complete?"
Maddox: "Well that's my plans at this time, yes."
The clip cuts away to a different angle of Maddox sitting at his desk.
Whipkey: "Well governor, what you've said sounds more like a leave of absence than a resignation."
Maddox: "If the name is cleared, if the cloud is removed, if the innuendos and suggestions that have been made are proven to be truly that and nothing else, then I think it would be cruel and wrong not to give Dr. Dyer the opportunity."
Whipkey: "Are you still a strong supporter of Dr. Dyer?"
Maddox: "Yes, sir. And a friend of Dr. Dyer's."
Whipkey: "...make any comment on this whole affair?"
Maddox: "That would be up to Dr. Dyer, sir."
Whipkey: "Doctor?"
Dr. William R. Dyer: "No comment."
Whipkey: "How do you feel about...was this your idea, to submit the resignation?"
Dyer: "It sure was."
Unidentified off-screen reporter: "Dr. Dyer, do you hope to serve on the Pardons and Parole Board?"
Dyer: "I look forward to doing so."
Reporter: Whipkey, Jim
