- Description:
- In this series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips, Abe Gallman reports from the construction site of a 650-unit public housing project on McDaniel Street SW in Atlanta. He notes that while the project nears completion, there are 2,000 people on Atlanta public housing's waiting list. "The city needs to double its low-income units by 1971, but is falling behind on that schedule. One reason is neighborhood opposition to a public housing project." Earlier in the year, a project slated for Sewell Road was voted down by the Board of Aldermen. He mentions that Atlanta mayor Ivan Allen believes public opinion "may keep Atlanta's public housing mainly where it is right now: that is, in the city's lower-income neighborhoods." However, given that Atlanta is using federal funds, the units must be distributed throughout the city according to the regional administrator for Housing and Urban Development. In the next clip, the HUD representative, Edward H. Baxter, notes that having an economic ghetto results in the kinds of problems seen in Watts, California. Atlanta wants to avoid that and have a balanced program that offers opportunities throughout the city. The next clip returns to Abe Gallman who wraps his report noting the differences between the requirements of the federal government and the political reality in Georgia. The final seven clips are silent showing the construction site and men working: on scaffolding working around windows, digging by the building, and burning refuse.
