- Description:
- This series of silent WSB-TV newsfilm clips shows an African American family being moved from a condemned wooden house at 229 [Butler St.?] to a brick house [179, street name not shown]. Two moving vans from "Flanigan, The Moving Man, Inc." are used to move the family and their belongings including a crib, bedsprings and mattress, tricycles, a vanity. There are several shots of the family members and other people from the neighborhood.
A sign on the old building reads "2 room Apts. Gifford Realty Co". Near the end of the clips, a sign posted reads "Location: 229 [possibly Butler St.] Date: 7-23-63. City of Atlanta, Department of Urban Renewal. This property has been inspected and conditions found which are in violations of the Housing and Slum Clearance Code of the City of Atlanta. WARNING. It is unlawful for this property to be rented, leased or occupied until required improvements have been made in a satisfactory manner. [There is small print and a signature that is unclear.]"
Other clips include shots of the street with children with wagons and a bicycle, and children playing on swings. There are also a series of clips with children shaking hands at the new house. There are some white women observing, and at times directing the move.
Buttermilk Bottom was part of Atlanta's Old Fourth Ward that was razed during the 1960s for urban redevelopment. The area was later renamed Bedford Pine.
