- Description:
- In this series of WSB newsfilm clips from Georgia State Prison in Reidsville, Georgia, probably in 1976, reporter Marc Pickard speaks to convicted murderer Carl Isaacs about the death penalty in Georgia.
The clips open with a shot of Marc Picard standing at the gate to the Georgia State Prison. A gate house and the prison are visible behind him as he says, "Fourth floor of that building behind me is the last stop for convicted murderers in the state of Georgia, and that's death row at the Reidsville state prison. There are 29 men on that death row, and, for some of them, the Supreme Court's favorable decision on the death penalty last Friday comes as a relief."
The clips then cut to Carl Isaacs, an inmate on death row. Isaacs was convicted in the slayings of the Alday family in Seminole County, Georgia. Isaacs is seated in a chair, and he shakes his head and appears to be speaking, but there is no audio in this portion of the clips. The clips cut to a close up of Isaacs' face, and he says, "No sir. It uh, I know..." The clips cut again to a wider shot of Isaacs seated in a chair. He appears to be speaking. Then the clips cut to a shot of Isaacs seated across a table from reporter Marc Pickard in which they both appear to be speaking, but there is no audio in these portions of the clips.
Next, the clips return to a close up shot of Carl Isaacs, who says, "I know that I don't have a future. I mean, I might stay upstairs a couple years waiting on appeal, but I'm ready to go if there, uh, if there's no other way out, which I doubt, I'd rather for them to go ahead and get it over with. It's uh, that's better than making me sit upstairs and suffer and wait some more."
From off camera, Marc Pickard asks, "If you had it to do all over again, do you really, honestly think that it would have turned out differently, if you had anything to do about it?"
Isaacs responds, "Well, it'd turn out different in some ways. As, you know, as far as pulling that trigger, and killing them people, I believe it would happen again."
The clips cut to Marc Pickard, who stands in an a white room, holding a microphone. He says, "It is now the responsibility of the court which originally passed sentence in these cases to set a date of execution. If that is done, Governor Busbee has the option of issuing a stay of execution for thirty days, at which point, the State Board of Parole can decide whether or not to commute the sentence to life, or to uphold the death penalty. If that is done, if the death penalty is upheld, then a new date of execution is set." At this point, the camera pulls out for a wider shot of the room, and the electric chair is visible next to Pickard as he says, "And Carl Isaacs and the other men here at death row will take that final elevator ride to the electric chair. At the Reidsville State Prison, Marc Pickard, Action news."
