- Description:
- In this WSB-TV newsfilm clip from Cuba on July 16, 1958, Raul Castro is interviewed in Spanish and English by an unidentified Anglo male reporter with the aid of translator "Deborah" (Vilma Espin Guillois) regarding the kidnapping of ten American hostages taken from the property of Moa Bay Mining Company on June 26, 1958, and 24 United States servicemen on leave from the United States naval base at Guantanamo Bay the next day.
The clip begins by showing the reporter with a group of men; several are armed, outside of a building. The reporter appears to be talking to some of them, but the clip is silent. The next clip, also silent, is of Cuban revolutionary troops in the countryside. They are in two lines, some standing, and some squatting. One unidentified male in the foreground is pointing to something or somewhere off screen. A third silent clip shows the soldiers leaning on a truck.
The fourth clip, with sound, begins the interview. Raul Castro (far left) and Ms. Espin Guillois are sitting beside a military vehicle while the unidentified reporter is seated slightly in front on the right. The reporter asks in English about the kidnapping of American sailors and civilians. The question is then translated into Spanish by Ms. Espin Guillois. Mr. Castro replies in Spanish that the reason was in order to get the world to understand the terrible reality of the situation in Cuba. They specifically took Americans so that the North American government, which had been facilitating Batista's warlike efforts against his own people, would be aware of what was happening in Cuba, including the mass assassinations of civilians. The next clip shows a close up of the Ms. Espin Guillois, but her translation of Mr. Castro's statement is not included.
The reporter then asks in English if Mr. Castro realizes that the reaction has worsened in the North American press towards the Cubans' activities. The Ms. Espin Guillois's translation of the question is not included. The next clip is of Mr. Castro responding in Spanish that the reaction was natural, but that the Cubans wanted to put forth their manifesto, attitude, and opinion about the North American government and the facts of what is happening in Cuba.
