- Description:
- In this series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips from Washington, D.C. on March 17, 1959, President Dwight D. Eisenhower welcomes Irish President Sean T. O'Kelly to the United States. The clips begin with two military members unrolling a green carpet for the St. Patrick's Day arrival. The next clip shows a group of military members presenting arms. The next clip shows a wide shot of the plane arriving in the background with a crowd of spectators in the foreground. The next clip shows military men with the flags of Ireland and the United States. The next clip shows Eisenhower and O'Kelly. The next clip shows a close-up of people in the crowd. The next series of clips include Eisenhower and O'Kelly's remarks, which are transcribed in full below.
Eisenhower: "Today everybody in the United States is Irish. Now those who look Irish and sound Irish and have Irish names, they don't have to prove this in any way. But anyone with the name Eisenhower must wear something green, which I have. In any event, all of us are Irish so I would say that for this day at least, though you come as the official President of Ireland, in our hearts you are President of all of us--for all of us."
O'Kelly: Mr. President, I salute my most distinguished subject. [Here he removes his hat and bows to Eisenhower who bows back as they both share a laugh.] It is as you have so graciously said a happy augury that the first official visit of the President of Ireland should begin on St. Patrick's Day. On this day, the Irish honor the apostle of the gale, but we are not alone in doing so. Nor would I venture to say is this to be celebrated with greater enthusiasm than here in the United States."
