- Description:
- In this series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips, from October 23, 1958, Republican National Committee chairman Meade Alcorn speaks to reporters about the 1958 Congressional elections, and about strong rhetoric from both major parties somewhere in the United States.
The first clip shows a view of a lawn and a structure with columns.
In the next clip, Alcorn stands, smiling, in front of a bank of microphones.
The next clip shows news cameras and their operators.
In the next clip, Alcorn says, "I know it's being transferred into votes. It's being translated into renewed vigor. I have never seen the Republican Party fired up as it has been fired up in the last three or four days since I became chairman about two years ago. There is a tremendous surge of enthusiasm and of spirit in the party."
As Alcorn finishes speaking, the next clip shows an unidentified white male reporter making notes in a notebook.
In the next clip, an unidentified reporter says, "Your opposition says in getting fired up, you're getting pretty rough, and sometimes a little dirty. What do you say to that?"
Alcorn replies, "Well, I've realized that when you tell the truth about some of the things that they've said and done, it hurts, and they feel a certain immunity when they get rough, but when they're answered, they think the campaign is getting tough. Mr. Butler said yesterday the Democrats had used admirable restraint in their language. I wonder if he'd read Harry Truman's latest [tribe?], when he referred to some of our speeches as political garbage. Now, if that's the kind of restraint Democrats want in this campaign, I can only say that people are going to be treated to some unusual language."
As Alcorn finishes speaking, the next clip shows another unidentified white male reporter making notes in a notebook.
In the next clip, Alcorn is speaking but his words are not audible for the first moments of the shot. He then says, "I feel that in 1948, we had it won about two weeks before election. We lost it in the last two weeks. The Democrats are experiencing the same thing, and I think we're going to see history in that respect repeat itself."
As Alcorn finishes speaking, the next clip shows unidentified members of newsfilm crews, apparently all white men, recording the event.
