- Description:
- This series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips from July 3, 1970, shows portions of a television program produced prior to the tenth annual WSB Salute to America Parade in Atlanta. Most of the segments are fragmentary and begin and end abruptly.
Footage begins with shots of TV studio camera operators while an off-camera voice introduces someone he addresses as "Commodore." A white male host, called "Jerry" by his co-host, introduces guitarist Chet Atkins. Parade grand marshal Elizabeth Allen joins them and starts to talk about her show, "Bracken's World." Atkins plays an arrangement of the Colonel Bogey March. An black female host, possibly called "Billie" by her co-host, introduces comedian Stu Gilliam. They are joined by Debbie Reynolds, who then recieves an award from two Girl Scouts. The female host begins to introduce a group of college performers; footage then cuts to the hosts and others in front of an unidentified costumed group. The male host passes the mic to broadcaster Don Eliott Heald, who announces they will present a "Salute to America" award to Vietnam veteran Captain Johnny Thomas Clack, a triple amputee. Clack is wheeled on camera in a wheelchair in dress uniform. President of Cox Broadcasting Jim Cox, Jr. gives a short speech (audio partially missing) and presents the award to Clack, who also speaks. The hosts wrap up the show.
Additional footage follows of Captain Clack on set and backstage, in part being interviewed by an unidentified white male reporter; he says he hopes to be discharged from the hospital in August and return to studies at the University of Georgia.
