- Description:
- In this series of WSB newsfilm clips from DeKalb County, Georgia, and Fulton County, Georgia, probably during January 1969, Ruth Eisemann-Schier attends the indictment hearing of her alleged accomplice, Gary Steven Krist, and lawyers involved in the case are interviewed.
The clips begin with a shot of a white car in a parking lot. A sign on the car door reads "Sheriff" and a group of unidentified white males stands around the car. The back driver side door of the car opens, and an unidentified white female in a policewoman's uniform exits the car, followed by Ruth Eisemann-Schier, wearing a plaid dress. Eisemann-Schier takes the policewoman's arm and they walk together, followed by four unidentified white males, past cameramen who are taking their picture and other unidentified white male onlookers. As they walk past a wall and out of view of the camera, the clips cut to an unidentified white male holding a camera as he descends a flight of stairs. He is followed by an unidentified white woman and Eisemann-Schier, who hold hands, and they are followed by two unidentified white males. The camera follows the women to a building, where the unidentified white woman opens a door.
The clips cut to a man identified as Richard House, who is in the drivers seat of a parked car. From off camera, an unidentified male voice says, "Did she appear nervous?" Another unidentified male voice asks, "And your name is Richard House?" and the man in the car responds, "Richard House. Naw, I wasn't nervous or nothing." One of the unidentified male voices asks, "Was she nervous at all?" House responds, "Yes, she was nervous. She was - about a mile and a half when I told her, then she got nervous. She began to shake a little bit. She was just shaking, like, was all. Other than that, she was alright."
Next, a white building is shown, and Gary Steven Krist exits the building in handcuffs, surrounded by a group of unidentified white males. Krist and the group walk toward and then past the camera. The clips cut to James Venable and an unidentified white male, who walk toward the camera. Then the clips cut again to a shot of only James Venable, the court appointed lawyer of Gary Steven Krist. Venable says, "It'll no doubt have some bearing in selecting a jury that's properly qualified to try him." From off camera, an unidentified male reporter asks, "Do you think this will take quite some time?" "Yes sir," replies Venable. "Do you intend to disqualify anyone who claims to have - be familiar with the case because of the publicity?" Venable responds, "Well, we'll attempt to, yes sir. We want to get a fair and impartial jury."
The clips cut to DeKalb County District Attorney Richard Bell, who stands in front of the same white building where the previous interview took place. From off camera, an unidentified male reporter asks, "Do you think it will be difficult to select a fair and impartial jury?" Bell responds, "I don't think so, this case is different from most. The people involved aren't from this section of the country; they're from some eight or nine hundred miles away, there's no prejudice in regard to who they are, and I think that a fair and impartial jury can be chosen from DeKalb County jurors."
Next, the white car with the "Sheriff" sign is seen turning a corner and driving toward the camera. Two unidentified white males exit the front doors of the car. The clips cut to the same white building that was shown in earlier clips, and the camera zooms in on one particular window of the building. The clips cut again, this time to two unidentified white males tho stand next to each other. A parking lot is visible in the background. An unidentified male reporter says something unintelligible off camera, to which the unidentified white male on the left responds, "I don't think we ought to comment on it at this time. On that, anyhow - I mean, we're not-" He is interrupted by an unidentified male voice from off camera, asking, "Is there any possibility of an insanity plea?" The man on the left responds, "I wouldn't rule out any possibilities, but I'm not in a position to make any comment on anything like that at this time. We've talked with the young lady what, twenty five minutes time at the most, and most of the time what we were trying to do was get to know her and let her get to know us. And we made a decision as to what we wanted to do this morning - this afternoon, and that's it." From off camera, one of the unidentified male reporters asks, "Do you plan to have a meeting with Mr. Krist's attorneys?" "That's a possibility, but, I don't know," responds the unidentified white male. "What do you plan to do now?" asks one of the unidentified male reporters. "Go to work on a case, I hope - don't you, Tom?" The unidentified white male on the right responds, "Yes sirree."
The clips cut to a shot of Ruth Eisemann-Schier, walking with the unidentified policewoman and followed by a group of unidentified white males. The camera follows the group as they return to the white car marked "Sheriff" and then cuts to a shot of Ruth Eisemann-Schier and the policewoman in the backseat of the car, speaking with two unidentified white males who are seated in the front. The car doors are closed and their conversation is not audible.
Next, the clips cut to reporter Abe Gallman, who stands in front of the Fulton County Jail, holding a microphone. He says, "Gary Steven Krist has been transferred from Miami to the Fulton County Jail. U.S. Marshals brought Krist here to the Fulton County Jail during the weekend, and word of his transfer leaked today. Krist was indicted in DeKalb County for the kidnap of Barbara Jane Mackle. He's being kept in the Fulton County Jail because it's a Federally approved prison and Krist is a Federal prisoner, being held on extortion charges in connection with the kidnapping. DeKalb County District Attorney Richard Bell says the next step will come next Friday, when Krist is arraigned."
The clips cut to a shot of DeKalb County District Attorney Richard Bell, who is seated at a table in an office. He says, "Krist will be arraigned in the DeKalb County Courthouse on February the seventh, at ten o'clock, before Judge H. O. Hubert, Jr. At that time, it will be determined whether he has council, and if he does, the judge will determine what length of time they feel that it will take for them to prepare for the trial. At that time, he will determine when the trial will take place, and Krist will be brought to DeKalb County by the U.S. Marshal for the trial." From off screen, Abe Gallman asks, "When do you think the trial will take place?" Bell responds, "Sometime in March or April."
The clips cut back to Abe Gallman, who stands in front of the Fulton County Jail. He says, "In the meantime, the F.B.I. is still looking for Ruth Eisemann-Shier, Krist's alleged accomplice in the kidnap case. This is Abe Gallman, WSB News."
Next, there is a shot of a brick wall bearing the words "Fulton County Jail" and the camera pans to the left, where the entrance to the jail is visible beyond some bushes. The clips then cut to a window in a brick wall behind a chain link fence. The camera pans to the right to show the length of the building. The clips cut again to show the entrance to the building.
