- In this series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips from April 1958, Peter Calisher reports on the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra and traditional Chinese dance troupes visiting Japan at the time of the Osaka Trade Festival.
The report opens with Calisher at the Osaka airport, where members of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra are shown exiting a plane and being welcomed by a crowd. Calisher says the visit is part of Communist diplomatic efforts to demonstrate their excellence in the arts and that China is also being represented in Japan by a group of folk dancers in Tokyo. The remainder of the report is footage of Chinese dancers and musicians performing at the Koma Stadium in Shinjuku.
The Japan International Trade Festival took place April 12-27, 1958; the orchestra visited as part of the overlapping International Festival of Music, Drama, and Art, which took place in Osaka April 10-May 10.
