- Description:
- Series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips taken from the debate between John F. Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey in Charleston, West Virgininia, 1960 May 5. The full debate was held May 4, 1960 at the studio of WCHS-TV, an ABC affiliate. The opening clip is a close-up of Bill Ames, WCHS-TV, asking a question, but this clip is silent. The rest of the clips have sound. Clips two and three are of Senator John F. Kennedy's response discussing his view that the supporters of Senator Humphrey and other candidates are in a coalition to stop the Kennedy campaign. The fourth clip is of Senator Hubert Humphrey. Off camera, an unidentified speaker (probably Mr. Ames) indicates that Senator Humphrey has one minute to respond. Senator Humphrey discusses his support among voters as was shown in his winning the Washington DC primary where the Kennedy campaign heavily supported Senator Wayne Morse. He indicates that he did not see this as a "gang up", but that he hoped he would win "honorably and without recrimination" in West Virginia as he did in DC. The final clip shows, left to right, the moderator Ned Chilton of the Charleston Gazette, and the panelists Bill Ames, WCHS-TV, and Dale Schuster, WTRF-TV. Mr. Ames thanks the candidates for appearing on the debate.
