- Description:
- In this series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips, Dick Clark and New York Congressman Steven B. Derounian comment on hearings regarding payola, Washington, D.C., 1960 April 29.The first two clips are silent. In the opening clip, Dick Clark, 3 unidentified men and one woman are standing behind a row of microphones outside of one of the congressional office buildings. A police officer is standing by the door. The next clip is of reporters. In the third clip, Mr. Clark states that he has been asked to repeat statements he made during the hearing that morning. He indicates that being "sworn under oath," he has never taken payola. He notes that, like many other entertainers, he has invested in the broadcast and music industry, and that it is in the nature of the entertainment business that one can received large returns on a small investment. The next three clips are silent; the first two seem to be inside the hearing room, while the last of these three show reporters outside of the building. The last three clips are of New York Congressman Steven B. Derounian, who was a member of the House Special Subcommittee on Legislative Oversight. The first and last clips in this group have sound; the middle clip is a silent shot of reporters. In the first clip, an unidentified off-camera reporter asks the congressman about his conclusions regarding Dick Clark and payola. Mr. Derounian replies that Mr. Clark has a different definition of payola than the committee is using. In the final clip, an unidentified off-camera reporter asks Mr. Derounian how he believes Mr. Clark got payola. The congressman's reply indicates that payola came through the various investment offers Mr. Clark received.Dick Clark appeared before the House Subcommittee on Legislative Oversight, chaired by Arkansas Congressman Oren Harris, on April 29, 1960, and again on May 2, 1960.
