- Description:
- In this series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips, Congressman and House Minority Leader Charles A. Halleck discusses pending labor reform legislation outside the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. on June 30, 1959. The first three clips are silent; Congressman Halleck is heard in the fourth clip. The opening clip is a shot of the United States Capitol building. Next, Congressmen Halleck, Everett Dirksen, and an unidentified man are standing behind several microphones outside the Capitol. The lens of a news film camera is in the right of the frame. The third clip shows newsreel cameras and cameramen at the side of the Capitol. The final clip begins with Congressmen Halleck and Dirksen standing next to each other. As Congressman Halleck begins to speak the camera focuses on him. The Congressman indicates that some of the legislators are standing firm on certain issues raised by the McClellan Committee with regard to labor reform. The McClellan Committee (United States Senate Select Committee on Improper Activities in Labor and Management), led by Democratic Senator John L. McClellan from Arkansas, looked into labor racketeering. One of the outcomes of the Committee's investigations was the Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act of 1959, also known as the Landrum-Griffin Act, the bill that resulted from the labor reform legislation Congressman Halleck discusses here.
