- Description:
- Reporter: Downs, Bill, 1914-1978.
Series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips of reporter Bill Downs discussing inflation, the rising cost of living, and the unpopularity of controls. Mr. Downs is seated in front of a closed set of Venetian blinds. The series of clips are all of his upper body; some shots are slightly closer than others.Mr. Downs begins by discussing the monthly report on the cost of living what he credits to the Commerce and Labor Department. This is probably the report that comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. He notes that the report for May of 1959 showed that the nation's cost of living was at an all-time high. He indicates that President Eisenhower has indicated that inflation is a danger to the nation's security. The wage negotiations between the union and the steel industry is presented as a contributing example of an inflationary spiral. Mr. Downs concludes that no one wants to see government intervention to control prices or wages as was done during war crisis periods.
