- Description:
- In this series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips from October 1, 1957, Marion B. Folsom, U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, gives a report on the decline in paralytic polio cases.
The clips begin with Marion B. Folsom standing in front of a group of microphones and a poster of a bar graph titled "INCIDENCE OF PARALYTIC POLIOMYELITIS." His report is transcribed in full below:
"In the last two years, this country has made dramatic progress in the long battle against paralytic polio. Today with steady increasing supplies of Salk vaccine, the means are at hand to give polio a real knock-out blow. This chart here gives a dramatic demonstration of how great a reduction we've had in the last two years. The first chart [bar] shows that we had 8,000 paralytic polio cases during the first nine months of 1955. That was before Salk vaccine was available in large quantities. The first nine months of this year there have been only 1,600 cases of paralytic polio. That's a reduction of 80%, which is quite dramatic. That is due to large part to Salk vaccine, although of course not entirely."
Here the clip zooms away from the poster and focuses on Folsom. He continues his report:
"Many years this country anxiously sought the means to avert the suffering and anguish caused by polio. Today we have the means to knock out this dreaded disease. Get your polio shots now. Don't press your luck."
