- Description:
- In this series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips from June 1, 1959, the set for the fictional plantation Tara, from the film Gone With the Wind, is returned to Atlanta, Georgia, an event marked by ceremonies including a parade and a speech by Governor Ernest Vandiver.
In the first clips, a parade including police vehicles, open cars and two Bekins moving vans is shown on an unidentified stretch of road. In the next clip, a crowd stands beside a Bekins moving van, probably in front of the Georgia State Capitol. In the next clip, a crowd surrounds a decorated platform in front of the Georgia State Capitol, on which a number of unidentified persons are gathered. The next clips show the parade continuing, with two Bekins moving vans, on one of which is seen a sign reading, "TARA COMES HOME," and an open car in which two unidentified white women ride, carrying guns or replicas of guns and wearing what appears to be Civil War-era costume. The next clip shows a band, dressed in what appears to be the costume of Confederate soldiers, and unidentified onlookers. The next clip shows a number of unidentified men and women climbing the steps of a building, probably the Georgia State Capitol. The women appear to be in period costume, and some of the women carry guns or replicas of guns; they are probably members of the Georgia women's militia the LaGrange "Nancy Harts." A Bekins moving van is parked at the curb. The next clip shows Governor Vandiver speaking to a crowd, probably from the same platform shown earlier. The next clip shows an unidentified white woman in period costume, who may be Miss Atlanta 1959 Mary Ann Swan, looking on and smiling as two unidentified men begin to remove pieces of the Tara set from a van.
