- In this series of WSB newsfilm clips from September 24, 1961 from Boston Harbor, footage is shown of an American Airlines plane partially submerged in water. Coast Guard ship CG40393 can be seen leaving the scene of the crash. The camera pans to show significant damage to the nose of the plane. Two men can be seen standing on each of the wings of the plane. Three men can be seen waiting outside the emergency exit before boarding a small boat.
The crash resulted in minimal injuries, though one person suffered a heart attack and died while helping rescue passengers. The flight originated in San Francisco. Limited visibility due to fog was to blame for the crash. The 71 passengers on board were rescued by local citizens in only 15 minutes.
