- Description:
- In this WSB-TV newsfilm clip from January 1961, an unidentified white male Navy officer explains how the Portuguese passenger ship, which was hijacked by Portuguese rebels led by Henrique Galvão (who is not mentioned by name in the clip), Santa Maria might be intercepted.
The clip shows an unidentified white male Navy officer standing in front of a world map. Using a pointer to illustrate his words, he says, "It's impossible for these two destroyers that are the nearest surface forces to catch up with it, because with the destroyers, the same speed capability of somewhere in the neighborhood of twenty-five, twenty-seven knots, you can see a differential of only five knots, which mean it would be some time before they could catch up. If they're not able to--if she is, in fact, going over this way, we have another ace in the hole which might work. Two destroyers, the [ship's name cannot be understood] and the Gearing, and a small tanker, the [ship's name cannot be understood], are in the area of Abidjan, the Ivory Coast. These are ships under command of South Atlantic force, and they are currently engaged in a people-to-people goodwill tour on the African coast. They were in Abidjan. They have been ordered to sea, fueled to capacity, to stand by in this general area here, till we determine exactly what Santa Maria is doing. If he is heading down this way, of course, they will have a good chance, with their tanker, if we take them all the fuel they need, to head out here and probably intercept them."
