- Description:
- Art Rosenbaum interviews Gordon Tanner, Phil Tanner and Joe Miller in Dacula, Georgia. Miller talks about how the area has changed with regards to music, and his music career. Miller played music as a child, and his family were musicians on his grandmother's side. When he was growing up, families used have dinner together and listen to the phonograph or play music and sing together. The listened to the records of Gid Towner, Riley Pucket, Jimmy Rogers, John Carson, Wade Manner, Clark Kessinger, Monroe Brothers, Delmore Brothers, and Blues Cowboys. Miller discusses Riley Pucket's style of playing banjo with two fingers, and his moodiness. Pucket was blind. Gid Tanner was different, he was very upbeat, and funny. Miller discusses his music career, and first professional experiences playing on various radio shows, such as the WGST Barn Dance for WGST in Atlanta. He credits the WGST music booker Charlie Bowman with putting them on the show. He also played for WGAU in Athens and WMAZ in Macon, GA, and WDOD in Chattanooga, and WIS in Columbus, SC. He played with musicians Bill Carlyle, Dottie Castlebury, Snuffy Jenkins, Floyd Loveless, Swampwater John, and Mary Lou Martin, and others. A young WIS young announcer named Jack Peterson gave Smokey Joe Miller his nickname. Next, Gordon and Phil Tanner and Joe Miller are interviewed. The Jr. Skillet Lickers consist of Gordon Tanner on fiddle, his son Phil on flat-top banjo, Randall Mahathy on 5-string banjo, and Larry Nash on bass guitar. Phil and Gordon dicuss the difference between bluegrass and old-time music. They talk about Gid Tanner's humorous nature, and tell stories about his performances. Phil says that Gid was an adequate musician, but an excellent entertainer, and that's what carried his band, the Skillet Lickers. A dubbed recording is heard in the right channel of this recording.
