Description:
Descriptive information on file: "Goodrich Dirt and the $1000 Reward". Original theatrical release December 23, 1917. 28mm release would have been out a few months later.
Black slug. Countdown. Black slug. Segment one: Goodrich Dirt And The $1,000 Reward, 0:18. A sign appears that reads "Goodrich Dirt And The $1,000 Reward An Animated Cartoon By W Carlson The Famous Cartoonist Produced By The Bray Studios, Inc. Process Patented By The Bray Hurd Process, Co. Aug. 11, 1914 June 15, 1915 Nov. 9, 1915 [Illegible] Copyrighted 1917." A cartoon man and a dog look at a sign on a wall that reads "$1000 Reward For Capture of Bandits Who Stole Mrs. Van Dough's Diamond Necklace." The man turns to the dog and tells him something. Title screen: "Dere's our chance to clean up some "jack" --- all we gotta do is capture them bandits." The dog nods at the man. Title screen: "Yeah! --- That's ALL we gotta do!" There's a man with a mean look standing in front of stores with signs that read "Cigars," "1884," and "Bank." The man and the dog look suspiciously at the mean looking man. The mean looking man starts walking away. The man and the dog start following the mean looking man. The mean looking man turns around and looks at the man and the dog. When he does that, the man and the dog stop walking and look around innocently. The mean man starts walking again. He gets to a building, looks around, and then goes inside the building. The man and the dog get to the entrance of the building and look at each other. Inside the building the mean looking man is standing next to a group of barrels. The man and the dog walk up behind the mean looking man and hide behind the barrels. The mean looking man pulls out a cigarette and lights it up. He starts smoking. The man with the dog puts one of the barrels over the mean looking man. The mean looking man tries to fight then stops. The man with the dog stands on top of the barrel he put the mean looking man under victoriously and snaps his fingers (the word "snap" appears next to his fingers). He says something to the dog. Title screen: "Now what'll we do wit' de reward, Spot?" Another mean looking man comes up walking on a wooden board and points a gun at the man with the dog. The man with the dog throws his hands up then looks down and a line forms to where he's looking, which is the wooden board the second mean looking man is sitting on. He jumps on the board and the second mean looking man goes flying in the air and then crashes on the ground. The man with the dog walks up to the second mean looking man who seems to be unconscious. The he turns around feeling victorious. The second mean looking man gets up and begins shaking and kicking the man with the dog. Then he holds him up and is about to hit him, when the barrel the first mean looking man is under begins to move. A speech cloud comes from the second mean looking man saying "Spooks!" He jumps in the air, frightened. The man with the dog looks at him as he runs away scared and starts laughing. The barrel the first mean looking man is under knocks over, and the first mean looking man comes out and tries to choke the man with the dog. Then when he is about to punch the man with the dog the word "Thump" appears from where the entrance is. The mean looking man puts the man with the dog down, and they each jump into a barrel. The words "Thump!" and "Blump!" continue to appear from the entrance. A policeman comes in looking around. The man with the dog is seen inside the barrel. The mean looking man comes out of his barrel while the policeman is looking away and throws the necklace inside the barrel the man with the dog is in. The man with the dog is seen inside the barrel as the necklace falls around him. The policeman looks inside the barrel the man with the dog is in and an exclamation mark appears as he discovers him. He pulls out the man with the dog and shakes him around. He puts him down and points a gun at him while saying something. A speech bubble appears from the side reading "Throw Up Yer Hands." The policeman throws his hands up. The mean with the dog gets on the ground and begins to crawl away with the dog. A small bird comes walking on the wooden board from earlier. The policeman looks at the bird and a question mark appears next to him. The bird begins to talk. The policeman runs away. The mean looking man comes out of his barrel. The man and the dog are seen running away. The policeman is running behind them. The man with the dog gets to a building and begins climbing it. The dog climbs behind him. The policeman climbs after them. They all get to the top of a building. The policeman chases the man with the dog around the top of the building. The man with the dog gets down to the floor and the policeman trips over him and falls over the edge of the building. The man with the dog looks over the edge and laughs. He then loses his balance and almost falls over. He then falls but hangs on with his fingernails. The dog tries to help him by grabbing his coat. The man climbs the coat and is able to get to the top of the building again. He puts his coat back on. Another policeman climbs to the top of the building. A speech bubble coming from the man with the dog reads "Another one?!" The policeman chases the man with the dog. The man with the dog climbs a pole and the policeman follows him. The weight of the both of them bends the pole. The man with the dog gets off, and the pole bounces back and throws the policeman into the air. The policeman is seen flying through the air. The man with the dog snaps his fingers victoriously (the word "snap" appears next to his fingers). Then he loses his balance again, and an exclamation mark is seen next to him as he realizes it. He regains his balance and then jumps off the building. The dog jumps after him. They land on the rooftop of another building. They walk to the end of that rooftop and look around. He then pulls out the necklace and drops it. On the ground, the second mean looking man is looking around and then the necklace falls around his neck. A question mark appears next to him when he realizes the necklace is around his neck. The man and the dog on the top of the building look straight ahead and a line forms to where he is looking. The man puts a rope around the dog. The first mean looking man is seen about to jump off of the first building. The man with the dog swings around the dog on the rope. He throws the dog, and he lands on another building. The first mean looking man jumps off the building. The dog pulls on the rope to make a tightrope for the man to walk on from building to building. The man is seen having a hard time keeping his balance while walking on the rope. The mean looking man starts walking on the rope. The man and the dog pull on the rope to make the mean looking man lose his balance while he is walking on the rope. They let go of the rope and the mean looking man falls. They look down as the mean looking man falls. The first mean looking man falls on top of the second mean looking man, and they are both unconscious; the second one is on the ground and the first one is inside a barrel. A black circle closes on the image. The man with the dog, still at the top of the building, opens up an umbrella, and they both jump off the building. A black circle closes on the image. A black circle opens up on the image of the two mean looking men unconscious on the ground. The man and the dog land beside them. The man throws the umbrella inside the barrel. He then picks up the mean looking man on the ground and throws him inside the barrel with the other mean looking man. The man with the dog yawns and a speech bubble comes from him reading "O-Hum." They sit on the side walk looking innocent. Thought bubbles appear from them with images of sacks of money that say "$1,000" on the outside. Then on the same bubbles, there are fantasy images of the dog eating meat and the man smoking a cigar on a car. A man comes and throws the barrel with the mean looking men in a cart that says "City Dump" on the side. The man and the dog don't notice. The cart drives away. The thought bubbles change back to the money bags that say "$1,000" on the side. The thought bubbles disappear, and they realize the barrel with the mean looking men is gone. Lines form from their eyes to where the barrel was. An exclamation mark is where the barrel used to be. A money bag with wings appears and replaces the exclamation mark. The money bag begins to fly away. The man and the dog faint. Black slug. A screen appears saying "Finish" upside down. Black slug. A screen appears saying "Foot" upside down. Black slug.
