- Menaboni, in the late 1950s, traveled to Japan where he discovered a special wood. It came from the Philippines, but was processed into plywood in Japan. Back home, he decided to panel his new studio in this Nakora wood; its deep and distinctive grain appealed to him. As he sat painting, however, he began to see images in it, and eventually his creativity and willingness to explore took over. At first he could make do with leftover scraps, but then he had to purchase more wood (a store near his home could provide it). It became his primary medium and remained so until the early 1960s. He incorporated the grain of the wood into each painting, allowing it to suggest trees or water or fields, depending on the particular piece of wood and the subject he chose to paint. The wood is no longer available.
