- Thomas Winston built the Woodlawn Plantation, along the east bank of the Chattahoochee River in West Point circa. 1830. His son, George H. Winston, would take over operations at the plantation after his marriage in 1839 (as his father had constructed a new home a few miles away called Newcastle).
