- Ruth Abigail Slack Smith was born in LaGrange, GA, on 18 February 1893. She attended public schools in LaGrange and went on to Agnes Scott College. She later finished a master's degree at Columbia University. She would serve on the Presbyterian Church's Education and Ministerial Relief Board. Smith would serve as academic dean of the Women's College of Duke University for 23 years. She married Hazen Eager Smith. She married Hazen Eager Smith (21 December, 1893 - 2 February 1919) on 2 March 1916, at First Presbyterian Church in LaGrange. After retiring from Duke University, Mrs. Smith moved to Atlanta, Georgia. She died on 14 May 1973 in DeKalb County, Georgia.
