- Description:
- From the Lucille Lane Collection: John Russell Ware, son of Daniel and Mary Poythress Ware was city marshal of LaGrange from 1881 to 1886. In this 1880 photo, he is shown wearing the LaGrange Light Guards Uniform. His maternal grandfather, Joseph Poythress, was one of the original trustees of LaGrange Female Institute and was generally considered to be one of the wealthiest men in Troup County. In fact, the expression ‘rich as Mrs. Poythress’ was mentioned in pre-Civil War letters, indicating it was a familiar reference to his widow.” Treasures of Troup County, Major & Johnson, Published by Troup County Historical Society, 1993.
