- In the 1920’s, Viola Burks was Executive Secretary of the LaGrange Welfare Association. She had witnessed many difficult family situations and saw a need to help children who, were missing much in life. She obtained funds from the Churches of LaGrange to provide a week’s outing at the very first encampment in 1926. In 1927, Miss Vi purchased 123 acres of land near Mountville, GA, and in 1928, the children’s camp became known as Camp Viola.
