- Description:
- The Brownwood Institute was a historical educational institution in LaGrange, Georgia. It was of the English Gothic architectural style. The institute, originally called Brownwood Female Institute, was two miles west of LaGrange. It was one of several academic institutes in the area. Opening in 1840 as all female, it became a male university by 1852 and closed in 1861 when war drained it of students. It achieved university status from the Georgia General Assembly in 1852.
