- Description:
- [NOTE: All of the material in this collection is photocopied. Originals are in possession of the Schaub/Milam/Mahaffey family.] Most of the material pertains to Julius L. Schaub's service in the Confederate Army. Schaub's reminiscences contain detailed descriptions of the battles in which he participated. He also described camp life and recorded occasions on which he saw such notables as Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee. Schaub's history of the 14th North Carolina Regiment describes the unit's organization and recounts its movements, battles and casualties. Miscellaneous Civil War related material includes a copy of Hardee's Tactics carried by Schaub during the war and casualty statistics for various battles and brigades. Schaub's certification for membership in United Confederate Veterans is included, as is a biographical profile prepared for publication in the Atlanta Constitution (n.d.), and Schaub's obituary which appeared in Confederate Veteran Magazine, 1911. A 1948 clipping from the LaGrange Daily News mentions Schaub's military career and describes Jefferson Davis' visit to LaGrange in 1886. A few documents (deeds, tax receipts, Odd Fellows Certificates, advertising circulars, and a rent contract) trace Schaub's post-war migration from North Carolina to LaGrange. A notebook records personal and business expenses, 1906-1908. The collection includes photocopies of three photographic portraits of J.L. Schaub (c.1880-1910) and one portrait of his father, John Frederick Shoup (c.1890). [The Troup County Archives photo collection contains several other photos made by Schaub.]
