- Description:
- Silent, black-and-white moving image footage shot in Thomasville, Georgia that begins with different young women participating in a beauty pageant. In the next scene, Miss America 1964 Donna Axum and a pageant queen attend a special event. This is followed by footage of a rose garden, with several close-ups of rose bushes. This is followed by numerous shots of old plantation-style buildings around town, people walking along the grounds of the plantation grounds, and cars driving down streets. Next is a historic marker for "Big Oak," one of the largest live-oak trees in the world; the camera then pans around "Big Oak." This is followed by a shot of pedestrians walking along a street with storefronts, and another shot of groups of people playing golf at the Glen Arven Country Club. This is followed by more shots of old plantation-style buildings around town, local business districts, and a historical marker for Thomas County. Next, a group of women arrange flowers at a series of tables. The following shot includes a map of the United States where the camera then closes in on Thomasville, Georgia. Next are several newspaper clippings that read: "Months Of Planning, Hard Work Go Into Staging Rose Festival," "Beauty Pageant Launches Whirl of Festivities," and "Sunny Skies Predicted For Annual Rose Show." This is followed by assorted table arrangements: an arrangement for dining, an arrangement for the display of roses, and an arrangement for awards. There is a Thomasville City Schools exhibit, more displays and arrangements of roses that include varieties such as "Snowbird," "Charlotte Armstrong," "Roses of the Future," and "Golden Slippers." There are more tables arranged for dining, and the display of roses. Next is a Kiwanis display of roses, more shots of roses arranged on tables, and a Thomasville Rotary Club display. The next shot is of a "Rose Test Garden" belonging to Thomasville Nurseries, Inc. This is followed by shots of a parade, featuring marching bands, floats representing local organizations, dignitaries riding in automobiles, pageant queens and their courts, Miss America, and Shriners on motorcycles and horseback.
