- Description:
- Color town film "Thomasville, City of Roses," with sound. The film begins with a countdown screen, then the credit screen "Thomasville: City of Roses," followed by a screen that reads "Kodachrome Photography Ken Stambaugh, Narrative Story Mabel Lawrence, Narrator Clyde McLean, Sound Recording and Special Effects Holly Smith." Another screen reads "Produced and Directed by Don Parisher." The film begins with footage of local buildings and landmarks around Thomasville Georgia, shots of the downtown business district, and the Thomas County courthouse. There are shots of more local buildings, including Greenwood Plantation. A group of women inspect a rose garden, a group of people ride on horseback past a large historic home, and people visit more plantations. There are shots of roses and flowering gardens interspersed with a child playing in a toy car, more modern homes, and people enjoying themselves outdoors. This is followed by a shot of an historic oak tree, "Big Oak," and shots of more flower gardens. This is followed by shots of local apartment buildings and hotels, including the Hotel Scott. Next are scenes of local dining establishments, people eating at tables, and visiting restaurants. There are several shots of people congregating around Thomasville's local churches, and of children gathered around several of Thomasville's local schools. These shots are followed by a shot of several medical buildings, including the Archbold Memorial Hospital. Next, we see the U. S. Veterans Domiciliary Center, its rose gardens, and an Atlantic Coastline Railroad train in the Thomasville train station, as well as several shots taken from Thomasville's nine paved highways. A segment on recreation shows footage of several movie theaters, golfers playing at the Glen Arven golf course, hunting dogs, fishermen, equestrians, and baseball spectators watching the St. Louis Browns, who conduct spring training in Thomasville. This is followed by a shot of the city's municipal auditorium. In another segment on industry, there are shots of several commercial buildings, including the W. J. Powell Co. building, the Sunnyland building, and the Watson Scott Company building, as well as a shot of a pine forest yielding lumber. A segment on agriculture includes several shots of livestock in fields, and a farmer holding a calf. This is followed by a shot of fresh produce on display in a supermarket, a shot of rows of plants, farmers carrying produce to a farmer’s market, and farmers negotiating over said produce in market stalls. Farmers walk over agricultural plots, followed by shots of roses planted in rows. This is followed by several shots of home properties with rose gardens. In a segment on news, a man holds up a copy of the Thomasville Times-Enterprise with the headline "YOU ARE INVITED TO ROSE SHOW FRIDAY," followed by shots of the WKTG building and a radio tower. This is followed by a segment on the annual Rose Festival, where several shots of the Parade of Roses show numerous floats representing scenes from the book "White Columns in Georgia" by Medora Field Perkerson. The Rose Festival queen and her court are the last float shown in the parade, followed by scenes from the pageant that selected the queen. Miss Neva Jane Langley, Miss America 1953, is seated on a throne, and her role in crowning the Rose Festival queen is mentioned. This is followed by shots of the Rose Festival dance, where the winner of the "Miss Deep South" pageant is crowned by Miss America. The last scenes are of tourists visiting Thomasville sites during the Rose Festival, followed by the Rose Exhibit, more closeups of roses, and beauty pageant contestants in bathing suits. The end credit reads "The End: A Don Parisher Production."
