- Description:
- Color film with sound titled "Where Roses Reign," produced by the Thomasville-Thomas County Chamber of Commerce in association with the Thomasville Garden Club, Inc. of Thomasville, Georgia. A few seconds from the beginning of the film are clipped, and it begins with the credit screen that reads: "in association with the Thomasville Garden Club, Inc. presents." Further credit screens read: "Photography by John King, Jr.," "Technical Assistants Mrs. Wallace H. Neel, Mr. Herman L. Huff, Mrs. L. Lawson Neel, Mrs. Wesley E. Milligan, Miss Emily R. Jerger," "Script by Theresa Holloway," "Produced Thru the Facilities of Russell & Barton Film Co." The film begins with a map of the United States that zooms into the location of Thomasville, Georgia. There are shots of the Thomas County courthouse, a business district with storefronts, older historic homes, rose gardens, pine forests, the local farmers market, grazing cows, local business buildings, golfers, people relaxing by the side of a pool, local plantation-style buildings including Greenwood Plantation, city boulevards, rose gardens and roses grown in Thomasville, and scientists studying local roses. This is followed by a shot of the Thomasville Enterprise, with the headline "Sunny Skies Predicted For Annual Rose Show," and a clipping that include the headline "Months of Planning, Hard Work Go Into Staging Rose Festival." There are more shots of roses, and then a clipping that includes the headline "Beauty Pageant Launches Whirl of Festivities." This is followed by shots of the beauty pageant, and the winner of the pageant, the Rose Queen, being crowned by Miss America 1964 Donna Axum. The next scenes are of the Parade of Roses, shots of the crowds, marching bands, floats representing local organizations, acrobat troupes, Shriners on motorcycles, and the Rose Queen and her court. This is followed by a shot of the town garden center, women arranging flowers inside the garden center, and examples of their flower arrangements on display. The Rose Queen and Miss America then open the city's rose show. There are shots of numerous tables and displays that include flower arrangements, all of which contain roses. A display is dedicated to Thomasville Nurseries, Inc. and specific varieties of roses that include "Perle d'Or," "Christian Dior," "Fashion," "Roses of the Future," "Charlotte Armstrong," "Snowbird," and "Golden Slippers." There are more shots of single roses on display in bud vases, as well as some field flowers and pansies. The next shot is of a table display of awards given to competitors in the show. This is followed by more shots of the Parade of Roses, of men planting rose bushes in front of the Chamber of Commerce, of women arranging flowers, and bustling business district. The film ends with several shots of roses, and a credit reading "The End."
