- Description:
- Diary of Hazel Beamer Cutler (1901-1980), dated August 15, 1924, to January 18, 1925. The diary describes Hazel Beamer's life in New York City where she attended college and performed as a dancer before she married and took the surname of Cutler. The diary begins with Hazel Beamer's mother, Eva Elizabeth "Bessie" Baker Beamer (1864-1955) visiting her in New York City. Bessie Beamer leaves New York City to return to Thomasville, Georgia, on September 5, 1924. Later in the diary, Hazel Beamer describes meeting "Mr. Shubert" of the Shubert Theater organization (probably Lee Shubert) to discuss performing in a traveling production called "Vogues" which she turns down; throughout the diary, she describes negotiating a performance contract with Lee Shubert and "Mr. J. J." (probably Jacob J. Shubert) that has been complicated by turning down the touring production of "Vogues." Hazel Beamer is being considered for an upcoming "Howard Brothers" show ("Sky High," a 1925 musical produced by the Shuberts). Hazel Beamer attends school and spends time with her most serious boyfriend "George" (George Schleich), frequently going on canoe trips and dining out with him. Hazel Beamer continues to date other men, including "Lester." She notes that she doesn't care for George Schleich's mother. She is pleased to see the aviators known as "The World Flyers" flying outside her window in New York City. She meets with a lawyer, as she is being designated a beneficiary in illustrator, portrait artist, and muralist Dora Wheeler Keith (1856-1940) 's will. Dora Wheeler Keith (referred to as "Dearie" in the diary) and her husband, New York lawyer and reformer Boudinot Keith (1859-1925) (referred to as "Uncle Boudi" in the diary) were Hazel Beamer's hosts and guardians in New York City. Hazel Beamer remarks on how generous Dora Wheeler Keith is to her. Hazel Beamer travels to Onteora, the artist's colony in Greene County, New York, the location of Dora Wheeler Keith's family summer cabin (established by Keith's mother, Candace Wheeler (1827-1923), the founder of the American decorative arts movement). Beamer attends a New York Giants baseball game. She sings for composer and pianist Dagmar Rybner. She takes dance classes with her instructor named "Tarasoff." She makes a point of introducing herself to comedian and performer Willie Howard, in whose production she will be performing. On Election Day (November 4, 1924), she votes a "straight Democratic ticket." Much of the diary describes her daily rehearsals for a show (that she calls "Gees") that travels to Massachusetts (Springfield and Boston), for several weeks in December of 1924, and her travels with it. She describes her daily life while situated in Boston, shopping and mailing Christmas gifts (itemizing all of the Christmas gifts she has purchased for friends and family). She is homesick and lonesome at Christmas being away from friends and loved ones. Her boyfriend George Schleich visits her the day after Christmas, and she shows him around Boston. She laments the closing of "Gees," and returns to New York City on January 5, 1925. She promptly meets with "Mr. Shubert" (again, probably Lee Shubert), who tells her he plans on making her a "specialty dancer" in the upcoming "Howard Brothers" show "Sky High." She auditions for "Sky High," but is irritated that the audition turns out to be a "big chorus call." She makes a point of telling the stage director "Mr. Felix" that she is a specialty dancer, "not a chorus girl."
