- Description:
- Folder of letters written by Hazel Beamer (before she took her married surname of Cutler, and who lived from 1901-1980) to her mother, Eva Elizabeth "Bessie" Baker Beamer (1864-1955). The letters were written mostly from New York City in the early 1920s while Beamer was attending college and performing as a dancer before she married. The correspondence details Hazel Beamer's activities in New York City. Hazel Beamer describes her passion for dance, and visits with New York-based friends and artists including portrait painter and stage designer Ben Ali Haggin, III (1882-1951). There are updates on assorted family members and friends back in Thomasville, Georgia. Hazel Beamer updates her mother on her dancing career, which includes performing with famed dancer Anna Pavlova, meeting Pavlova, getting hired as a dancer for the Ziegfeld Follies, her experience meeting producer Flo Ziegfeld, and her work in productions such as "Du Barry." She also describes her recovery from a foot operation.
