- Description:
- Spirit spouse figurines created by the Baule people of Côte d'Ivoire..
Spirit figures such as these are considered to be the embodiment of the spouse each Baule man and woman leaves behind in the spirit world when they are born into the living world. As such these sculptures are to be revered and treated with the same care as a living person. These two figures are most likely made by the same artist, or in the same workshop. Both are made for the art market, and their surfaces have been treated to make them look older than they really are. However, their proportions and their quality of carving make them good examples of the Baule aesthetic.
