- Placard.
In 1968, African American sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee went on strike to protest dangerous and unfair working conditions. The workers carried placards like this one as they marched to make their plight known. The sanitation workers were eventually successful, and the placards they held aloft have since become iconic symbols of the civil rights movement. Unfortunately, their fight for respect and better working conditions cost the nation the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who was shot dead at the Lorraine Motel while in Memphis aiding the workers in their struggle.
