- Description:
- Carved wooden granary door created by the Dogon people of Mali.
A carved granary door like this one protected the window-like openings in to a Dogon family's grain storage building. The higher one's status in society, the more elaborately designed the door would be. The doors were decorated with images of ancestral spirits, kanaga masks and animal figures representing fertility in the land. The decorations made the doors sacred objects. This particular door was made for the art market, but it is carved well, and is a quality illustration of Dogon aesthetics and mythology.
