- Description:
- Iris print by Glenn Ligon.
Ligon is known for multi-media works that are rich in symbolism, that requently employ appropriation or quotation, and commonly explore such issues as race, sexual identity, representation and language. The subject of this work is a placard carried by Memphis sanitation workers during a strike in 1968 that was the final civil rights march for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. The notations on the right side of the work describe the effects of time on the placard, and are a symbolic comment on the role and effects of race in contemporary society.
