Buchanan is an artist who regularly employs a variety of media in her work. As a child, Buchanan often accompanied her father, a state agricultural advisor, on tours of Georgia farm lands. As a result, she was able to see and experience the poverty of tenant farmers, sharecroppers and migrant workers. These memories have followed her through life, and are the inspiration for the images of shacks that are the major focus of her work. The colorful shacks, which are absent of people, give a sense of cheerfulness to what could be considered a depressing subject, and at the same time make a powerful statement about the socioeconomic conditions of agricultural life in the Deep South.
