Since the 1960s, Gilliam has been recognized as a color field painter whose constantly-evolving works have advanced the ideas of the Washington Color School and Abstract Expressionist artists with whom he is associated. In the 1980s, Gilliam began adding sculptural elements to his canvases, leading to the production of three-dimensional sculptural paintings like this one. Because of his commitment to experimentation, Gilliam is honored as one of the nation's most respected artists, and a leader in his community of Washington, D.C.
