Verner was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and studied with Thomas Anshutz at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In most of her work, she captures the beauty of Charleston and its citizens, both black and white, in etchings and soft pastels. She was a prominent figure in the Charleston Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s, and subsequently helped to promote the historic preservation of the city.
