The art of Romare Bearden is complex, colorful, metaphorical and autobiographical. He was born in North Carolina, but grew up and received his education in New York, where he earned a degree in mathematics from New York University, and studied art with German painter George Grosz. Bearden worked in a variety of media, but he is best known for his work in collage.
