Savannah State University is a unit of the University System of Georgia
an equal opportunity/affinnative action employer
Savannah State University is
the oldest historically black
institution in the University
System of Georgia. Located on a
165-acre tract adjacent to a salt-
marsh estuary, SSU offers 26
undergraduate and graduate
degree in three colleges:
Business Administration, Liberal
Arts and Social Sciences, and
Sciences and Technology.
Students may pursue master's
degrees in Public Administration
and Social Work.
Most of the approximately
2,800 students enrolled at SSU
are Georgia residents. Other
states and foreign countries are
represented as well. Students
can take part in numerous social
and academic organizations as
well as intercollegiate and
intramural sports. SSU athletes
compete in baseball, basketball,
cross-country, football, tennis.
track and field, and volleyball.
The Marine Sciences Program
at SSU is the only one in the state
that is located in a natural setting.
Students can study marine life in
a wet laboratory or travel off
shore on board one of three
vessels. The University offers
four-year Naval ROTC programs,
which prepares students for
future leadership roles in the U.S.
Navy or Marine Coips.
Historic Hill Hall, built by students shortly
after the institution was established in
1890. undergoes a transformation for its
role in a Hollywood movie production.

Charles Elmore, humanities professor and 1997-98 Regents' Distinguished Teacher.
The picturesque campus grounds sit be-
neath moss-draped trees that are sur-
rounded by blooming azaleas.

the SSU campus.
SSU students are serious about their aca-
demic roles. Here, two students take ad-
vantage of the warm and sunny climate to
study outdoors.
Hail to the
Chief of SSU:
Dr. Carlton E. Brown
"My phrase is
'high expectation
-- high support.'
And the more you
expect from
people, the more
you have to
surround them
with the right
support and
structure to get
things done. "
All eyes turned to Savannah State
University President Carlton E.
Brown on July 1, 1997. when he
became the 11th president of the
institution. Brown arrived with a
commitment to establishing an
open, honest, responsive and
forward-looking administration.
His efforts to advance the fortunes
of the university have been directed
at building constituent
relationships, addressing the
quality of student life,
communicating effectively with
students, and pursuing
improvements in program quality
and student outcomes.
When Brown talks about the SSU
student body, he advances them as
the finest anywhere. He engages
students in honest dialogue about
the issues that pose serious
challenges to the university. There
is little that happpens at SSU that is
not preceded by direct information
from the president to the campus
family.
The president is Hanked by his daughter.
Jamila. and wife, T. LaVeme Ricks-Brown.
American Studies from the
University of Massuchesetts in
Amherst in 1971. Brown worked as
a teacher and counselor in an inner-
city alternative high school for
three years. After becoming head
teacher/counselor, he returned to
the University of Massachusetts for
doctoral study, which he completed
in 1979.
Prior to taking office at SSU.
Brown was vice president for
Planning and dean of the Graduate
College at Hampton University in
Hampton, Virginia, a position he
was promoted to in 1 996.
A devoted family man, he is married
to T. LaVeme Ricks-Brown and
theyhavetwochildren: Kwameand

Savannah State Graduate Takes
the Helm of the USS McFaul
The Savannah State University family stood tall
and proud on April 25, 1998, when U. S. Navy
Commander Bernard L. Jackson became the first
captain of the USS McFaul. the Navy's newest
billion dollar destroyer, during a commissioning
ceremony held at the Georgia Ports Authority.
The McFaul was commissioned in Savannah at
the request of Jackson, who is a native of Macon.
Georgia, and a graduate of Savannah State.
Jackson also served as an instructor in the
school's Navy ROTC program during the early
years of his career. The McFaul is the first ship
under Jackson's command: he is one of 15
minority ship commanders in the U.S. Navy.
Prior to the commissioning ceremony, SSU held
"Commander Bernard L. Jackson Celebration
Day" on the SSU campus. Although the campus
parade was rained out, the faculty and student
spirit shined brightly for Jackson and his career
accomplishments. During a program in Elmore
Theater. Jackson addressed NROTC midshipmen
and others, afterwhich he was showered with
greetings and gifts.
