February, 1987

Dear Students, Alumni, Faculty, Staff and Friends:

The 1987 "Tiger" yearbook will record for
posterity the events that took place this academic
year. Many of your personal and academic achievements
are highlighted in this publication. Your yearbook
is a historical document that will become more
important to each student as the College approaches
its centennial. This year chronicled the beginning
of new degree programs and academic buildings for
the School of Business and the program in marine
biology.

I challenge graduating seniors, continuing
students, faculty, staff, alumni, and all friends
of Savannah State College to give strong and vigorous
support. May your fondest memories and accomplishments
be preserved in this excellent document.

LORNA JONES

SSC 4.0 Student Honored by Regents

Lorna Faye Jones, a junior at Savannah State College, was honored at the Georgia University System's "Academic Recognition Day" on
Jan. 27.

Miss Jones maintains a 4.0 grade point average and is pursing degrees in mathematics and electronics engineering technology. She was
selected as Savannah State's honor student for the regents' observance based on her perfect academic record. The regents honored the
students with the highest GPA from each of the system's institutions.

Miss Jones and college President Wendell G. Rayburn participated in several recognition day activities. They had dinner at the home of
Chancellor H. Dean Propst on Jan. 26 and visited the state capitol on Jan. 27. Plans included meetings with Gov. Joe Frank Harris, Lt.
Gov. Zell Miller and Speaker of the House Tom Murphy. Also, they were introduced to the House of Representatives and Senate and had
lunch with members of the local legislative delegation.

Miss Jones has been named to the National Dean's List and Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges and has received the
Hodge Foundation and Porter scholarships at SSC. She has served as secretary of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, is a
member of the Newtonian Society, Beta Kappa Chi, Alpha Kappa Mu and Tau Alpha Pi all academic honor societies. She tutors other
students in the areas of mathematics, electronics and physics during her spare time. Her hobbies are traveling, karate and photography.
She said she attributes her success to "effective time management" and her view of life as a "holistic process."

Miss Jones, who plans a career as a design engineer, is a native of Chicago and moved to Savannah in 1 982 with her parents, Horace and
Chlora Jones. She holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry with a minor in biology from Oakwood College in Huntsville, Ala. She plans to
pursue master's degrees in electrical engineering and business administration, she said.

SSC GETS $200,000 GM AWARD

SSC President Wendell G. Rayburn (center) stands proudly with GM and EEOC officials upon receiving
award.

On October 27, 1986 Savannah State College received a $200,000 scholarship endowment grant from
General Motors Corporation, marking the largest gift SSC ever has received.

President Wendell G. Rayburn accepted the gift at the meeting of the U.S. Equal Employment
'Opportunity Commission in Washington.

"I was pleasantly surprised to hear we had been picked," Rayburn said. "We don't know all the facts
about why we were selected, but the fact that the college has degree programs in business and engineer-
ing technology seems to be a factor."

49

Savannah State College will get more mileage on the
state and nation's highways when college employees,
students, alumni and friends sport commemorative li-
cense plates this year. The plate, featuring the college's
historic Hill Hall, will assert the college's presence and
publicize its approaching 1990 centennial. The Georgia
State Legislature approved development of the plate
during the 1986 session. SSC student Irvin T. Harris,
who served as a Georgia State Government intern, was
instrumental in securing legislative approval. SSC pro-
fessor, Lester B. Johnson Jr., Ph. D., head of SSC's
Engineering Technology Department, designed the
plate.

year in the "BIG APPLE" at world famous Apollo Theatre. She was
chosen one of 1986's Amateurs of the Year in a four-round competi-
tion. As a result of that competition Selena won "some paper" and got
her name put in "the books" at Motown Productions in New York
City.

We wish her much success in the future. From your classmates,
faculty and staff here at SSC.

Congratulations to "Song Bird" a "Rising Star."

CASEY GRIGLEY

ALL-AMERICAN CANDIDATE

Casey Grigley is the premier running back in the Savannah State College offensive arsenal. He
emerged as a top runner in 1982 when he was just a rookie. He was the Tigers second leading rusher
with 296 yards on 73 carries. He also scored three touchdowns. Grigley averaged 4.0 yards per carry
that year. His sophomore year was spent on the side lines as he sustained a knee injury prior to the
beginning of the 1983-84 season. In 1984, Grigley returned to lead the Tigers in rushing with 687
yards and three TDs. That year he averaged 4.5 yards per carry.

In 1985, Grigley again led all Tiger rushers with 809 yards on 219 carries; as average of 3.7 yards
per carry. He also rushed for 6 touchdowns. His senior year 1986 was by far, his most productive.
He had an excellent change of becoming the first SSC player to rush for 1,000 yards in 44 years;
maybe the history of the school. Grigley is currently averaging 5.3 yards per carry. He was selected
to play in the 1986 Freedom Bowl, which is a Black College all-star game. With his diligent efforts
he may one day-soon play for a Super Bowl team.

TIGERS END WITH A WINNING SEASON

With the help of a new football coach, Mr. William Davis, Savannah State
College came out on top with an overall 6-4 season and a conference record
of 4-3. The Tiger football team faced a lot of changes with their determina-
tion, motivation, and discipline. The most striking force on the team was
Casey Grigley, a senior. Casey became the first person ever to rush for
more than 1000 yards at SSC. The defensive players did a super job this
year. They held the majority of their opponents to less than 20 points. The
Tigers have a lot to look forward to next year.

VOLLEYBALL IS NEW AT SSC

The volleyball team is in its second year of existence at Savannah State College.
The team is coached by Mr. Gene Sims. Coach Sims worked hard to train the
young ladies since most of them had never played on an official volleyball team
before. Unfortunately, most of their opponents had been playing for a long time,
and therefore were more experienced than our team. The young ladies played with
a lot of motivation, and this will help them improve their record in the future.

The men's basketball team is coached by Jimmy Westley. The team plays
with a lot of motivation that they obviously get from their coach. The crowd is
always cheering during the games because the team is so active during the
game. Every player on the team plays like he is on one of the starting five. The
players knows what it's job is and they do it.

TIGERETTES
TAKE IT TO THE HOOP

The women's basketball team is coached by Saralyn Truedell. There are a
couple of new players on the team this year, and the gossip around campus is
that they look like they can really play some ball. We hope so. So far the
young ladies have been playing very well this season and it looks like they may
come out on top. One good thing is the young ladies never give up and that's
what makes a good team. Hopefully, the Tigerettes will have a good season.
The SSC family is cheering for you.

THE FINISH LINE IS OUR
DESTINATION

The track team is coached by Richard Washington. It takes a lot of
endurance and stamina to run track. Nothing beats the joy of crossing the
finish line first and hearing everyone cheer. The track team is small, and
only the best make it to the end.

Top Row: Charles Peterson, Coach Washington, Kenny Tate. Bottom Row: Melvin Williams, Ronald Day, Eric Brown.

STUDENT PUBLICATION

To Fellow Students and Other Members of the SSC Family:

Completing the 1987 Tiger was a very laborious and time-consuming task.
However, a quality annual was produced.

I would like to thank my staff and all others who assisted in some way. I
would also like to thank Mrs. Debra Wilson, Mrs. Carless Lawyer, and Mr. Lee
Grant Pearson for their help and comfort in times of despair.

To those of you who will work on the annual staff in the upcoming years
GOOD LUCK! !

To those of you who will sit back and not cooperate, complain and criticize
-- ACTION SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS!!!

Yours truly,

Valerie M. Andrews
Editor-in-Chief
