Not only is he an excellent educator and a dynamic leader, he is our mentor and our friend. Mr.
Otis Johnson has given unselfishly of himself for the perpetuation of Savannah State College.
Words are so inadequate to express the love and appreciation therefore we, the Tiger Staff, dedi-
cate the 1979 TIGER to Mr. Otis Johnson for unyielding dedication.
26
Dr. Thelma Harmond did not create the education department but, because of her intense dedica-
tion and sheer determination, it has evolved into a dynamic force at Savannah State" . . . like a
mother bending over her baby . . .", Dr. Harmond has nursed the education department to its
present state of maturity. We, the Tiger Staff, dedicate the 1979 TIGER to Dr. Thelma Harmond
for a job more than well done but a job done excellently.

OFFICE OF
THE PRESIDENT
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
I should like to take this opportunity to express congratulations
on behalf of the entire Savannah State College Family to the Editor,
Staff, and Advisors of the 1979 Edition of the "Tiger. " This publica-
tion has demanded much time and sincere effort on your part, and all of
us are grateful to you for your dedicated and conscientious service.
To those of you who are departing, I consider it a great honor
and privilege to extend to you hearty congratulations upon your graduation
from Savannah State College, You are completing your work in a time of
many social, economical and technological changes which are taking place
at an amazing rate. These changes, which we face, place upon the shoulders
of educated men and women great responsibilities which cannot be ignored
or shirked. The college-trained person is expected to take the lead in
helping to lift the masses of people to higher levels of social responsi-
bility, political freedom, healthful living, and economic betterment. Vie
hope that the training which you have received during the years at this
institution will enable you to make a lasting contribution towards the
achievement of these goals.
May this Yearbook provide you with a permanent and loving record
of your contributions to the great history of Savannah State College,
and may it serve always as a means of keeping alive in your hearts and
minds the love and loyalty which you have for your Alma Mater.
Wherever you go and whatever you do, always remember that you
carry with you the best wishes of the entire Savannah State College
Family for your happiness and success. As you go forth from the College,
always keep in mind your responsibility to yourselves, your fellow
citizens, and your God.
I remain
Sincerely yours,

SPORTS
TO THE SSC FAMILY
The 1979 TIGER has experienced a very trying school year; everthing
seem to have gone wrong from the desegregation plan to the 1979 edition
of the TIGER. I am very sorry to say that due to limited funding we
could not produce all of our sections this year; however, we have tried
to do the best job that we could under the circumstances. I would,
also, like to apologize to our athletic department for not having the
funds needed to cover our many fun-filled sporting events, but I am
looking forward to a budget next year that will be appropriate
to our needs here at SAVANNAH STATE COLLEGE. Please, as you turn through
this sports section, do not think of it as a reproduction or duplicate of
the 1978 TIGER but rather a continuation of the greatness of last year's
athletes.
Thanks very much for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
The 1979 TIGER STAFF
T. WjLlliams, Jr. Editor-in-Chief

Head Football Coach
Frank Ellis
After serving as an assistant for so long, young Frank Ellis is now head Tiger mentor
that put SSC back on the football map.
Ellis played football and basketball for Johnson High and later for Savannah State. He
played quarterback for SSC, and his knowledge will really help the quarterbacks.
Ellis's enthusiasm rubbed off on his players. The 1977 season is ancient history to him,
as he envisions the Tigers embarking upon a new era, winning more than last year.
He did a lot of recruiting in '77 after getting the job for '78 has signed 15 men. All were
outstanding players in high school and Ellis hopes this carries over into college ball. Ellis
isn't making any predictions.

Student Publications
S.S.C. NOW, THEN, AND FOREVER is really appropriate for this year's edition of the
TIGER, for this may very well be the last year for Savannah State College as it presently
exists. Next year we will lose our Division of Education to Armstrong State College,
which is one of the best in the South, if not "THE BEST" and our Division of Business
Administration will join with Armstrong's Division and become united as a School of
Business located on SCC's campus. To the Students, Faculty, and staff of Savannah State
College, as you look or have looked through this publication think again about what these
pictures and words represent and then start from page one again and obtain the true
meaning of our theme: SSC NOW, THEN AND FOREVER-KEEP IT BEAUTIFUL.
I hope that on the second "'go-round" you will be able to understand what it means for
a Black College to survive today.
I would like to thank God for letting me be a part of this historic school; special thanks is
also given to the many students and faculty members who have expressed their interest in
this publication.
I would also like to say on a final note, that, all students who will be matriculating as
Savannah State College for the 1979-80 school year to please feel free to exercise your
rights and privileges as a student and put forth more effort to see to it that changes are
made when needed.
Sincerely yours,
Tommy Williams, Jr.
Editor-in-Chief 79 TIGER

To capture Savannah State College in all of her majestical splendor was my goal for
the 1979 TIGER. I sincerely hope that I have been successful in attaining that goal.
This book is the culmination of hours of hard-work, incessant determination, and
unyielding love. A dedicated staff, who freely gave up their Saturdays, is to be commended
for a job well-done.
As always, there is one person who does his job and the job of everyone else. In our
case, that special person is our editor, Tommy Williams, Jr. Through his patience,
kindness, understanding, and knowledge, you see before you the 79 TIGER. Without
Tommy Williams there would be no TIGER!
And last but not least, I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the teachers, the
staff, and the students, for without you there would be no Savannah State College. It is
because of you and others like you that Savannah State existed then, exists now and will
exist forever!
Sincerely,

OCTOBER 1978
r the years, our Black
Jges have paid the price to
j alive," Scott expressed
iestly. He also emphasized
struggle of Black people in
1960's; how it was a time of
s, sit-ins and the emergence
01 ivlartin Luther King, Jr., and
Malcolm X as two of the great
spokesmen for the Black Revo-
lution. Scott explained that the
central issue then was race and
violence, but now in obtaining a
clearer focus we have come
from fighting for "civil rights to
political rights."
Rep. Scott addres sed the
walk around or party around
thinking that everything is
much better today - because it
is not.!
According to Rep. Scott,
there is a new racism on the
rise in today's society: 25 years
ago racism was visible, but
today it is even more vicious
because it is invisible.
"The survival of Black col-
leges is at the crossroads,"
Scott stated. He alluded to the
idea of a pendulum swinging ir
this country. "The conserva
tive, reactionary, discrimina

is steam. It's swing
;'s swinging fast, it's

Savannah State College is on
the move! This was only one of
the many expressions used to
describe the impression many
received from Expo '78. Savan-
nah State College's "Expo 78"
was held on September 23 and
was a total success. Planned
and coordinated by the Student
Government Association and
other interested students, pre-
parations for Expo '78 began in
early July. Mr. Bobby Adams
and Mr. Dan Robertson assist-
ed the students in coordinating
this first time ever event!
There were a number of
community awareness pro-
grams that participated in
Check, oavauimii rouce de-
partment, Georgia Department
of Public Safety, NAACP, the
Young Democrats of America,
the U. S. Army and many other
groups gave their full support
to make Expo an interesting,
educational, and informative
day-
There was also fun and
games for the crowds present.
There were sport events such
as the four-mile run, volleyball,
tug-of-war, dodge ball, table
tennis, sacks races, and frisbee
throwing contests. Checkers,
backgammon, and chess tourna-
ments were also held. Trophies

enjoyed the facilities of the
nursery's playground.
The students of SSC and
people of the community were
entertained by several bands
throughout the day. The 24th
Infantry Division Band from
Hunter Army Airfield opened
Expo with a variety of musical
sounds. Chocolate Snow, Bro-
thers Funk and the Zodiac
Players all added to the festivit-
ies with their musical talents.
Brother Monday also assisted
in giving Expo rhythm by
laying down some very hot
wax.
Many groups were barbequ
ing, selling hotdogs or candiec
apples. And there were free
sodas provided by the Coca
Cola Bottling Company anc
there was a free crab boiL
The Student Government
Association would like to thank
everyone who made Saturday,
September 23rd such an explo-
sive event. Most deserving oi
praise are the students thai
served on the committees and
those who helped supervise the
events. To the SGA27lipep up
the good work.
There is hope that such an
event will occur again; there-

OUR ALMA MATER
LET US GIVE THANKS AND PRAISE TO THEE,
TO OUR ALMA MATER, S.S.C.
THINE HONOR, PRIDE, AND EMINENCE,
WE RAISE IN PRAYERFUL REVERENCE.
GUIDE US STILL FROM DAY TO DAY,
BE THOU MINDFUL LEST WE LOSE OUR WAY;
HELP US KNOW THAT LIFE, SHORT OR LONG,
MEANS UNCEASING WORK FOR WEAK AND STRONG.
REFRAIN
WHERE SAVANNAH MEETS THE SEA,
WHERE GRASSY PLAINS AND PALMS ABOUND,
WHERE THE FLOW'RS ARE GEMS OF LOVELINESS,
THERE S.S.C. IS FOUND.
WE ADORE EACH BEAUTEOUS SCENE AND HALL,
OUR ALL WE PLEDGE TO THEE!
IN OUR HEARTS WE'LL BUILD A SHRINE FOR THEE.
WE HAIL THEE, S.S.C.
