The second volume of The Tiger is presented by the Senior Class of 1949. It
is not intended to represent an expression of scientific research or learned method-
ology. Rather, it is intended to present in a simple and informal manner a pictorial
view and review of Alma Mater as an historical reminder of the best years of one's
life college days.

To say that the responsibility of planning and editing the book has been achieved
without a goodly portion of hardship would be a mere modest statement, for every
responsibility has its accompanying difficulties. Even so, each difficulty surmounted
has its compensating rewards. In retrospection, the staff counts its rewards greater
than the difficulties a worthy yardstick by which to measure success or failure of
any undertaking.

Appreciation is expressed to those many friends business men, faculty, patrons,
alumni, schoolmates, and classmates who have lent so graciously of their support
and interest toward making this book a reality.

The Editor

D E D I C A

W. K. Payne
Dean of Faculty

To a renowned professional educator whose influence inspires young;
men and women to worthy achievements; to a good citizen whose
integrity and foresight are of inestimable value in the leadership of
his community; to a gentleman and friend, whose life is worthy, of
emulation, the Senior Class proudly dedicates this hook.

T I IV S

Janie L. Lester
Dean of Jf omen

To one whose contributions are recognized as invaluable services
to the college and to society ; to a woman whose influence and guid-
ance have made her known throughout Georgia and neighboring
states; to a lady of high moral standards, noble thoughts, and genu-
ine warmth that endear her to all whom she touches, the Senior
Class pays a humble tribute by this dedication.

Powell Laboratory School serves a two-fold purpose at
Georgia State College. In terms of the child, it offers edu-
cational opportunities to boys and girls who live in the col-
lege area. For them, the school seeks to offer such experi-
ences which are conducive to good mental, social, and phy-
sical development. Every effort is made to secure the serv-
ices of well-trained and professional teachers who can project
a modern program of elementary education.

On the other hand, the name Laboratory School implies
that the program further provides guided practice experi-
ences for college students who major in elementary educa-
tion. Under the supervision of alert teachers, these stu-
dents learn the "know how" of actually putting into prac-
tice the concepts and methods which they learn in their col-
lege classes, thus coordinating the theoretical with the prac-
tical.

Headquarters for Agriculture Extension work with Ne-
groes in Georgia was set up at Georgia State College in the
spring of 1919. Since then, it lias grown from one state
worker and two full-time county workers to a force of six
state workers, two office assistants, and seventy county
workers. 4-H Cluh enrollment has gone from 4 1 3 in 1920
to over 43,001) in 1948. From a program touching 2,650
persons in 1920 to a movement reaching and influencing
half of Georgia's Negro farm population in 1948. Agricul-
ture Extension work has proved its need and practicality.

Down mi the coast in Georgia

There stands a school so fair,
Her sons and daughters loyal

Will always do their share.
1 he\ come from north, east, south and west ;

The} come to Georgia State,
And there they learn to do life's tasks

And knowledge to partake.

Chorus

Georgia, Georgia, we love thee,

Love thy moss-laden oak trees.

There's no school can take her place,
Dear old Georgia State.

On to victory, Georgia, go!
On to conquer every foe.

GEORGIA stands for Victory.
