- Jessye Norman, an Augusta native, began her career as an opera singer in 1969 with the Deutsche Oper Berlin in Germany. She subsequently performed in Milan, Italy, and London, England, before making her debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1983.

Norman, a native of Augusta, Georgia, is a world renowned operatic soprano. In 1997 she became the youngest recipient, at age fifty-one, of the Kennedy Center Honor and today incorporates jazz, popular music, and spirituals into her concert programs. - Metadata URL:
