- Wesleyan College in Macon was chartered in 1836 as the first college in the United States to grant degrees to women. Construction began in 1839, and the college has undergone several expansions since that time. This photograph was taken sometime after an expansion that occurred prior to 1876.
Photograph of the Wesleyan College building in Macon, Georgia, taken sometime after an expansion that occurred prior to 1876. This is a large Greek revival brick structure featuring a portico and six simple columns leading to the entrance. A smaller level is built atop the main portion of the building. A square tower rises from the center of this level. Several trees grow in front of the structure.
