- Description:
- Dickey's best work came in the first fifteen years of his career, and most of it is presented in his collection Poems: 1957-1967 (1967). His novel Deliverance (1970) brought him popular success and was a turning point for him both personally and artistically.
Photograph of author James Dickey working in his study in Columbia, South Carolina. He sits at a wooden desk which has three drawers on each side. His back is turned to the camera. The walls are lined with bookshelves, all of which are full of books and papers. Large piles of books and papers are stacked on the floor. In 1968 Dickey was named poet-in-residence and professor of English at the University of South Carolina, where he remained for the rest of his career. Dickey ranks, along with Conrad Aiken, as one of the two most important Georgia poets in the twentieth century. - Metadata URL:
