- In 1968, during the Vietnam War, Max Cleland (far right) was injured in an accident, in which he lost both his legs and his right hand. He was awarded the Silver Star and the Soldier's Medal.
This photograph shows Max Cleland, sitting in a wheelchair on the far right, shaking hands with a man running by in a race. A sign behind Cleland reads "Run, run for the Max!" Many other runners are shown participating in the race. In 1968, during the Vietnam War, Cleland was injured in an accident, in which he lost both his legs and his right hand. He was awarded the Silver Star and the Soldier's Medal.
