- Description:
- Bibb County African American training school under construction, Works Progress Administration Program, 1936.
Photograph of workers constructing an African American training school in Bibb County, Georgia in 1936. Three African American construction workers are laying brick, two are standing in front of a low brick wall, and one is digging with a pickax. Brick support pillars have been installed, and the space for the foundation has been cleared out. Brick walls are beginning to rise from this space.
Among the major achievements of New Deal programs in Georgia was the work of the National Youth Administration (NYA). Pushed and guided by the first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, the NYA worked across racial lines to encourage the state's young women and African American teenagers of both sexes to pursue an education. Broad in scope and remarkably egalitarian, the NYA offered hard-to-find jobs to students who needed financial help to stay in school. - Metadata URL:
