- Description:
- Turner's CNN began to gain respectability throughout the 1980s. Its all-news format allowed the time for specialty shows focusing on medical news, sports, and other topics. Its focus on live coverage, much of it from cameras on the scene, gave CNN's broadcasts a special sense of urgency.
This photograph shows CNN founder Ted Turner standing at a podium with a sign attached to the front. The sign has the CNN logo and the words "Cable News Network. Turner Broadcasting System" printed on it. Known variously as a media titan, cable-TV pioneer, father of the Goodwill Games, owner of a World Series champion, skipper of a yacht that won the America's Cup, feature film producer, and restaurateur, Turner began by parlaying an overextended billboard company and a low-power television station into a communications giant. - Metadata URL:
